5 Tips on Being a Best Friend

1. Never judge. The world is already filled with people who are constantly making quick judgments and making others feel bad for themselves. If you’re going to be one of those people, you should also recognize that no one is going to want to be your best friend. Let your friends live their own lives and you will find that they will respect you for it. Respect must exist before you can ever really be close to someone so this rule should be maintained.

2. Be concerned. While you should let your best friends live their lives, this does not mean to be entirely impartial to them. If a friend seems upset, ask what’s wrong. If they don’t want to tell you, give them that space. If your friend is doing something that is hazardous to their own health, don’t just let it happen because you think it’s not your place to speak up. No one wants a best friend who doesn’t care about them. If you do not demonstrate how much you care about them, how should they ever know?

3. Keep secrets. To a certain extent, secrets are a kind of test of one’s character. When a friend tells you something about themselves that they don’t want others to know, don’t be the cause of the leak. Keeping even the smallest of secrets establishes a trust that will grow stronger with time. There will be secrets that are really hard to keep and these will be the greatest tests of all. However, exposing one’s secrets only says that you care more about gossip than you do about a person’s feelings. A best friend never behaves in this way.

4. Be honest. This is one of the most difficult rules. It’s extremely easy to lie to people and tell them what they want to hear. We have a natural instinct to want to make people happy so we shy away from hard truths. However, these are the things that people need to hear. If a friend asks you if they look good and they absolutely do not, don’t lie and say they do. While maybe you give your friend a little ego boost before heading out, the suffering blow of looking stupid in a club (or anywhere else) will be far worse and the blame will land on you. And being honest goes much deeper. Sometimes best friends make mistakes or screw up. This, more than ever, is when honesty comes into play. You should not be afraid to tell a friend that they’ve hurt you. The two of you need to hash out the problems before you can be close again. Of course, on the other side, you must be willing to hear your friend’s honesty as well.

5. Inspire happiness. Be someone that brings as much joy into life as possible. Everyone has a bad day and no one is expected to be in a good mood all the time. However, pessimistic people will often find themselves alone. People want to feel good as much as possible. Every friendship has dark moments but if there are never happy moments then the friendship will suffocate and die. No one rushes to spend time with someone who only knows how to put others down. Attitudes are contagious and if yours is not worth catching, people will not want to be around you. This rule may seem superficial but it is the most important rule. Positivity will help you excel in all facets of life. Stay upbeat and face the world with a smile, and your best friends will thank you for it.

These five tips can be summarized as such: If you want to be a best friend, be the kind of person that you’d want to be best friends with. Once you get double digits in your age, best friends stop randomly happening. Friendships sometimes require just as much work as relationships. However, by following these five tips, you will have lasting friendships. You will make friends who will be there for life and you will find a happiness the likes of which you never thought to be possible. You will be happy.

Sometimes I really think I'm better off alone because I can't be there for everybody all the time. I have got my own matters - things that I WANT to do.

I think we are at the age where we don't have to be around each other constantly as a measure of what we mean to one another.
